EL CAJON — Kennedy Skatepark in El Cajon is broadening its transportation horizons.

Starting Monday, the East Madison Avenue facility opened its gates to scooters and BMX bikes, on top of the usual diet of skateboards.

City spokeswoman Monica Zech said the change was spurred by concerns that riders were damaging downtown sidewalks and other infrastructure. She said the city hopes to channel that youthful energy to the popular park.

“It’s kind of a trial thing to see how it works out,” she said.

Park users are required to buy a $5 ID card. Kennedy Skatepark is at 1675 East Madison Ave. More information is available at 619-441-1676.
